Book Cover Defeat of the Cyber BullyAward-winning author, Ben Halpert, and illustrator, Taylor Southerland, bring the Savvy Cyber Kids back in their newest adventure – The Defeat of the Cyber Bully!

What:

Come celebrate the official book launch (and more!)  of the new book, The Savvy Cyber Kids at Home: The Defeat of the Cyber Bully!

Book Description:

The adventures of CyberThunder (Tony) and CyberPrincess (Emma) continue in The Savvy Cyber Kids at Home: The Defeat of the Cyber Bully! While playing an online game, CyberPrincess and CyberThunder encounter a cyber bully. Throughout the book, Tony and Emma learn strategies on how to appropriately respond to a bully online. Like most important life lessons, teaching online safety begins in early childhood. The Savvy Cyber Kids are just the right playmates for preschool children and Emma and Tony speak their language. Through traditional early childhood teaching tools, this colorful book reinforces the message of online safety with pictures and rhyme. This playful tool and the Savvy Cyber Kids friends teach our children how to appropriately respond to a cyber bully before they start playing in the virtual world.

Why?

Our children are growing up in a connected society. They are being exposed to technology before they understand the implications of their actions. Laptops, iPads, smartphones, and portable gaming devices are great technologies for performing specific tasks or providing a source of entertainment. What we as adults must understand is that while for us, these devices are simply the new gadgets of our time, for our children raised in an electronic environment, familiarity breeds acceptance and a false feeling of safety and normalcy.

You would never leave your child alone at a public playground for fear they may be abducted; so why would you let them loose on Internet-connected devices without properly preparing them for the dangers that lurk there? Children must learn coping mechanisms and appropriate responses to misinformation, cyber bullies, and other threats they will be exposed to in games, social networks, or other activities online.

Cyber bullying has become an epidemic. Savvy Cyber Kids, a 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit, has developed a new prevention and response tool for parents and teachers to engage our youngest learners in cyber bully related conversations. The hardcover book, The Savvy Cyber Kids at Home: The Defeat of the Cyber Bully, will be released on October 1, 2011 and will be available at all booksellers. Digital ebook versions are available for Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble nook, iPads, iPhones/iPods (via iBookstore), and through Google ebooks.

Last year, on October 1, 2010, the nonprofit published its first book, The Savvy Cyber Kids at Home: The Family Gets a Computer, to help parents and teachers introduce the concepts of computing devices, online activities, protecting personal information, and online identities. The book, with associated lesson plan and activity sheets, has received great feedback and taps an unmet need in our educational marketplace.
